“Treasure your curiosity and nurture your imagination. Have confidence in yourself. Do not let others put limits on you. Dare to imagine the unimaginable.” ~ Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson
Dr Shirley Ann Jackson (not to be confused with Shirley Jackson the amazing author of The Haunting of Hill House) is a celebrated American physicist, philanthropist, and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng). Not only was she appointed to the Nature Conservancy Global Board as a result of her dedication to environmental conservation in 2020, but the honors and awards that supported this nomination include the Vannevar Bush Award for “a lifetime of achievements in scientific research, education and senior statesman-like contributions to public policy”, appointment to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology by President Obama, induction into the National Women’s Hall of Fame, and the National Medal of Science.
If this is not enough to inspire women to achieve greatness, she is among the highest-paid university presidents in America, was the first African-American woman to earn her PhD at MIT, and was the second African-American woman in the US to earn a doctorate in physics.
